Production roles

Upon research I have gathered that producers plan and coordinate various aspects of film production, such as selecting script, coordinating writing, directing and editing, and arranging financing. They play an important role in film but so does everybody else so i guess i’ve also learnt all roles in film are equal as they all rely on eachother.

A screenwriters responsibility is researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the screenplay, and delivering it to development executives. Screenwriters have great influence over the creative direction and emotional impact of the screenplay. They either pitch original ideas to producers or screenwriters are commissioned by a producer to create a screenplay from a concept.

Production Designer:

In film and T.V, a production designer is the person responsible for the overall visual look of the production. Production designers have a key creative role in the creation of motion pictures and television. They work directly with the director and producer.

Art Director:

The art director is in charge of supervising and unifying the vision of the director and screen writers. In particular, the art director is in charge of the overall visual appearance and how it cumminicates visually stimulates moods, contrasts features, and psychologically appeals to a target audience. The art director makes decisions about visual elements used, what artistic style to use, and when to use motion.

A film director is a person who directs the making of a film. Generally, a film director controls a film’s artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking.

Associate Producer:

The associate producer helps the film producer and director with their work or gets set their own thing to research or focus on.

First Assistant Director:

The role of an Assistant Director on a film includes tracking daily progress against the filming production scedule, arranging logistics, checking cast and crew, and maintaining order on the set. They also have to take care of the health and safety of the crew.

Script supervisor:

A script supervisor is a member of a film crew and oversees the continuity of the motion picture including wardrobe, props, set dressing, hair, makeup and the actions of the actors during a scene. The notes recorded by the script supervisor during the shooting of a scene are used to help the editor cut the scene.

What I learnt

From watching other peoples films i have learnt how to use an egg timer as a camera panning device for time lapsing from Betsys piece. I have also learnt how to take more effective shots especially from  Nathaniels and Maxs films.

Safety protocol for filming.

It is safe to say no Julies,Alfies or Ethans were harmed during the making of my film. Ethan was attacked with make-up for his half but he only got a bit of mascara in his eye. I had to make sure my dog Julie was allowed on the premises as we didn’t want her pooping or peeing on anybodys graves. The only other safety issue was making sure Ethan didn’t get carried away with filming and fall into the pond at the crematorium. Luckily Julie did not have to evacuate herself and Ethan didn’t peace out to sleep with the fishes.

Task three:The Visitor ideas

Title: The Visitor.

Story: The basis is an unwanted spirit in a home (the visitor).

Date: Thursday-sunday.

Films that inspired.

The setting of the woods is inspired by Evil dead and Cabin in the woods. The idea of a crazed maniac or creature being in the woods is inspired by Jeepers Creepers which was made in 2001 by Victor Salva.

Alfie character is in an abusive house hold and he walks into the woods to leave flowers on his mothers grave and he gets a visit from her (hence the name The Visitor as the title).

Scene ideas

  • Alfie starts off by waking up and taking a swig of Jack Daniels (prop alcohol its actually juice).
  • In the next scene he styles his hair in the mirror, smiles and then gets angry as he thinks little of himself so he puts on a beanie and walks out angrily.
  • We have a shot of him grabbing his coat and putting it on.
  • puts leash on his dog and walks through the garden and out.
  • we’ll then have a  and sets down the flowers. Possibly have a close up shot of him shedding one tear.
  • 1st person shot of his face and you see a hand hold his face and he looks up shocked.
  • His dead mother hugs him and the camera pans away as they huddle in the woods and the shot fades to black.

Upon filming my sequence i changed the story so its just a sad boy visiting the grave of a lost loved family member and someone coming over to comfort him. I changed it as i thought my original is too cliche and i thought it would be more original to jave a simple idea.

Little shop of horrors

This shot is very clever and took a lot of work as it shows how much effort directors will put in to one shot. The shot is used to show the dentist singing his song “I am your dentist” whilst he is savagely working on a patients mouth. For this shot a giant funtional puppet mouth was developed just for the effect of perspective for the audience.

the crack fox

In the series ‘The Mighty Boosh’ you meet the crack fox and in the shot he declares himself as the crack fox. You can also see this as he looks drugged up and his hands are practically made of syringes.
